Sherway Rebel Rambler

  Sherway Rebel Rambler

Our first Griffon, Simon, or 'Tzigane Simple Simon' (by Chosendale Seasprite ex. Shelvey Tonic) bred by April Proctor, arrived here aged four months in February 1973, as company for our three year old Golden Retriever.

We had known April and her Griffs for several years and therefore knew and were enchanted by the breed.

Simon was a black & tan smooth showing quite a bit of promise at this early age. Several senior and established breeders advised us that we would have been better to have started off with a red, as black & tan smooths at that time weren't exactly 'flavour of the month'!!

Undaunted, but rather seeing his coat and colour as a challenge, we started to show him quite extensively, and at many shows he was the only black & tan smooth present !! He was placed at most shows for which he was entered, achieving many B.O.B.'s at open shows, and to our utter delight won the Reserve C.C. at Bournemouth Championship Show under Stanley Dangerfield in 1974.

We had now become 'hooked' on this colour and had begun to look for a wife for him, not necessarily black & tan, but carrying black & tan bloodlines.

Our prayers were answered when we were approached by Mrs Pat Johns from Monmouth, at South Wales Championship Show. She had a puppy she'd bred which needed re-homing. Her name was Barbie, or 'Rollsview Barbarella' (by Chosendale Munjey Tom Bowler ex. Chosendale Caramel) and although she was a red rough, the black & tan breeding behind her was just what we had been looking for.

The Sherway affix was born as was our first litter in September 1976. Followed in 1978 by the litter which contained probably our best known dog - the black & tan rough Sherway Rebel Rambler (below) still remembered by so many today.

He was campaigned heavily during 1979. He gained his Junior Warrant and won four Championship Show 1st's, sixteen Championship Show 2nd's, plus a Best Puppy in Show and numerous B.O.B.'s at Open Shows. But sadly was never entirely happy in the ring after a very unfortunate incident at Darlington Championship Show in 1979. However, stud work was something he really enjoyed! He was used many times and on several occasions by the late Doone Raynham (Mahnyar), and was behind much of her excellent black & tan stock.

BRISTLE - Rambler's littler brother

When John became disabled in 1980 and had to spend a year on his back, the serious showing had to take a back-seat, so we bred our last litter (by Bumble - Sherway Rebel Rambler ex. Lonely - Sherway Royal Acclaim) in February 1984. We kept all three puppies but unfortunately none of these were bred from due to the prevailing domestic circumstances.

Over the years our interest never waned and we couldn't wait to get ourselves another puppy, preferably another black & tan. In 1998 we were fortunate to be offered a black & tan dog puppy by Doone Raynham, which sadly turned out to be from the last litter Doone bred before she passed away.

Bearing in mind the ancestry of the puppy (he is a descended on both sides from Sherway Rebel Rambler) Doone registered him as Mahnyar Rebel Dancer, to perpetuate the Sherway connection, which was just so typically Doone!

This precious little bundle of joy and mischief was of course Taz. He was later joined by his favourite companion, Paws. She's a Petit Brabançon.

After a very full and happy life, our beloved Taz passed away in May 2010.
